Information about capacity surcharge for our service agreement customers

Capacity surcharge to be applied between November 23, 2020 – January 15, 2021.

It is gratifying to see that e-commerce continues to grow. The latest E-barometer shows that e-commerce increased by 16 percent during the first quarter. This increase is positive for the industry, but also creates challenges for both transport companies and their customers during the peak season of the year, which starts in conjunction with Black Friday.

Several capacity-enhancing measures are taken because of Black Friday and the Christmas shopping season, and these involve additional costs. Volumes are large during this period, partly as a result of the high number of returns.

With a shortage of drivers and a high demand for transport, the cost of transport capacity increases, and this becomes particularly apparent during the peak season. No business can be dimensioned based on the extra resources that have to be utilized in such periods, so a balance has to be found between the normal situation and the ability to handle extreme peaks. One way of dealing with this issue is to apply variable pricing in different seasons, which is the approach that is used in many countries and business sectors.

To cope with the challenge of handling large volumes during a relatively short period of time and to minimize the impact on customer and consumers PostNord takes a number of measures during the peak period, such as:

  • hiring additional transport capacity in the form of trucks and drivers
  • taking on extra staff
  • having longer opening hours at distribution points
  • opening additional, temporary distribution points during the period
  • home deliveries to recipients on weekends

In order to cover the extra costs, we will apply a capacity surcharge during the period November 23, 2020 – January 15, 2021, for certain parcel services. The surcharge is SEK 4 per parcel for the services PostNord MyPack Collect, PostNord MyPack Home, PostNord Return Drop Off and PostNord Return Pickup.
